F.A.Q

  • What are the 2024 Trash & Recycling changes?

Starting Jan. 1, all trash and recycling MUST be placed in a cart for pickup. Items not in carts will not be picked up.

Residential homes are eligible for two trash carts and one 96-gallon recycling cart. New automated recycling carts will be delivered mid-April 2024.  One trash cart was provided to each residence within the Municipality and should remain with the property.  If you find there is not one with your home, please contact your realtor to contact the previous owner.  The original cart is owned by the Municipality and must remain with the home.  You can purchase a second trash cart through your local home improvement/hardware store (must be compatible with mechanical lifters); the Municipality also has a limited number available for purchase (for a second cart only).

Glass recycling is now included!  Beginning in January you can include glass in your new recycling cart.  Recycling will be collected bi-weekly.

Bulk pickup will be scheduled the first FULL week of each month.  You are allowed two bulk items per pickup. Allowable bulk items remain the same.  In 2024, if you have an urgent need for bulk item pickup outside of the specified week, you can call Waste Management to schedule special pickup for a fee (from Waste Management).

  • Can you tell me more about the trash carts?

You will not be receiving a new trash cart, but you will receive a new recycling cart in mid-April 2024.  All trash carts must be compatible with mechanical lifters.  You can purchase a second trash cart if you’d like one through your local home improvement/hardware store (must be compatible with mechanical lifters); the Municipality also has a limited number available for purchase (for a second cart only). Questions?  Call 412-831-6800, x205.

  • What if I need more than two trash carts?

Additional carts (above two) are available for rent from Waste Management for a yearly fee.  In 2024, the cost will be $110; in 2025, $117.70; in 2026, $125.94; in 2027, $134.76; and in 2028, the cost will be $144.19.

  • When should I have garbage placed at the curbside for pickup?

Please have your garbage at the curbside by 6 a.m. on the morning of pickup.

  • When will my garbage be picked up on my pickup day?

You can expect your garbage to be picked up by 6 p.m. on your pickup day (there are times when delays may occur for reasons such as new drivers learning the route, a mechanical failure to the vehicle, etc.)

  • What are the observed holidays?

Waste Management observes the following holidays:  New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.  When your collection day falls on one of these holidays, or a day that week after the holiday, your service will be delayed one day during that week only.  There will be no delays if a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday.

  • Will I be billed for garbage collection?

Garbage collection fees are covered by Municipal taxes.  Households with more than two carts will receive an annual bill from Waste Management.

  • How do I report a missed collection?

Step 1: Please call Waste Management first at 1-800-866-4460.

Step 2: (If Waste Management does not recover the missed pickup):  Navigate to bethelpark.net and click the “Connect” tab -> ”Citizen Action Line” -> ”Garbage and Recycling”  -> “Garbage/Recycling Not Picked Up.”  From there, you’ll be able to submit a complaint that goes directly to the Municipality’s Community Development Admin who will report the missed collection to Waste Management.  If feasible, a driver will be sent out to collect within 24 hours.

If unable to have concerns addressed, you may call the Community Development Admin at 412-831-6800, x205.

  • How do I acquire garbage or recycling carts?

One trash cart was provided to each residence within the Municipality and should remain with the property.  If you find there is not one with your home, please contact your realtor to contact the previous owner.  The original cart is owned by the Municipality and must remain with the home.  You can purchase a second trash cart through your local home improvement/hardware store (must be compatible with mechanical lifters); the Municipality also has a limited number available for purchase (for a second cart only).  To rent additional carts (above two), you will need to call Waste Management at 1-800-866-4460.  Questions?  Call 412-831-6800, x205.

  • What if I need help placing my garbage at the curb?

If you are unable to safely move your garbage/recycling to the curb for collection, please acquire a note from your doctor stating your inability to do so.  Please contact Waste Management at 800-553-7771 for assistance.

  • How many items may I place at the curb each week?

Residents are permitted to place two full carts each week.  Bulk items may be placed the first FULL week of each month (two bulk items per pickup). A bulk item is considered anything that does not fit inside the approved cart.  Examples include furniture and appliances (not containing freon).  For a more detailed list of approved waste, please reference the Waste Management Newsletter.

  • Where can I recycle glass?

Cardboard recycling is available on your designated week and all cardboard MUST be placed in the 96-gallon recycling container.

Additional cardboard recycling drop-off is available at:

    Michael Brother’s Hauling – 901 Horning Rd., Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. & Saturday from 7 – 11 a.m.

    U-Haul Pleasant Hills5 Clairton Blvd, Pleasant Hills, PA 15236, Monday – Thursday & Saturday from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. – 8 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

  • What if I have something else to recycle or dispose of that is not accepted by Waste Management?

Visit Allegheny County’s Recycling Drop-Off Finder for up-to-date waste drop-off locations including items such as cell phones, hazardous waste, medications, batteries, and more.

Visit the Pennsylvania Resources Council website to find a Hard-To-Recycle or Hazardous Waste Disposal event.

  • What happens if I discover wires down?

Wires are supposed to be 15’ in the air.  The garbage truck legal height is 13’6.”  The phone/cable wires are sometimes approximately 13’.

Wires do sag over time with heat and weather; therefore, that’s beyond our control.

The resident will be required to contact the utility company – Waste Management does not.

Typically, the driver will go back to that area once the wires have been secured.

  • How can I sign up for collection notices?
