BETHEL PARK'S ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION PLAN

Bethel Park has officially adopted an Active Transportation Plan. Thanks to a grant from the WalkWorks Program and engagement with the community, Bethel Park was able to finalize this document and officially adopt it in April 2026.
What is Active Transportation?
Active transportation is any self-propelled, human-powered mode of transportation that includes things like walking, running, using bicycles, e-bikes, wheelchairs, scooters, and skateboards.
An Active Transportation Plan (ATP) is a strategic roadmap meant to create safer, more accessible and interconnected networks for non-motorized travel. The development of Bethel Park's Active Transportation Plan is funded by the Municipality of Bethel Park with a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Health's WalkWorks initiative.
Why Is Active Transportation important? The ability to walk, bike or wheel somewhere: lowers fuel consumption and costs; reduces congestion, vehicle emissions and air pollution; and facilitates opportunities to exercise and socialize! Walking, biking, and other forms of human-powered mobility improve overall health, well-being and quality of life in Bethel Park, and can help contribute to and spur the local economy.
How does an Active Transportation Plan help Bethel Park?
It helps us identify projects and policies that will improve our infrastructure and make walking, biking and wheeling through our community safer and more convenient. We’ll also identify where public transportation services are needed most and how we can work with our regional partners to improve access to public and shared transportation services. An adopted Active Transportation Plan will identify and prioritize projects to improve connectivity and outline strategies to fund infrastructure improvements. It will also make Bethel Park more competitive when applying for grants to implement Active Transportation Improvements!
The Bethel Park Active Transportation Plan is funded through the WalkWorks Grant Program. WalkWorks is a collaboration between the Pennsylvania Downtown Center and the PA Department of Health. The funding is provided by the State Physical Activity and Nutrition Grant and the Preventative Health and Health Services Block Grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
