Rainy Day Blues & Greens

Rain Soaked the Stalls, but Not our Spirits

Week four of the Bethel Park Farmers’ Market brought something unexpected: rain. Not the gentle kind we could’ve prepared for, but the surprise downpour that emptied pockets and dampened plans. Attendance was our lowest yet—understandably so—but the day wasn’t without its silver linings.

Even before 3 p.m., community members were showing up in ponchos and under umbrellas, ready to support the vendors who are here week after week, rain or shine. That loyalty is something I don't take lightly. And while foot traffic was lighter, that quiet actually gave me a rare chance to talk with our vendors beyond the usual quick greetings or troubleshooting in the booths.

One vendor shared with me how at other markets or festivals, food truck lines can sometimes block small vendor booths entirely—people waiting for their meal, backs turned, without so much as a glance at the artisans and farmers just feet away. That hasn’t been the case here. Our new food-court-style layout seems to invite flow instead of crowding, and more importantly, Bethel Park visitors are attentive and kind. They see the people behind the tables.

I also got to experience a full demonstration of olive oils and balsamic vinegars from one of our specialty vendors. I’ve tasted oils before, sure—but this was different. Rich, complex, balanced—like something out of a chef’s kitchen. It inspired a bigger idea: collaborative tastings. Imagine a bite of something made from three or four of our vendors’ offerings—a pairing of fresh bread, that olive oil, local cheese, herbs—something special we can share with the community. It’s in the works. Stay tuned.

We also quietly launched a small children’s activity for National Sunscreen Day, though the theme was a bit ironic under the storm clouds. Three kids still got activity books, and one even entered our new raffle basket giveaway. Each week, kids can earn raffle tickets by completing themed activity pages—and at the end of the season, one lucky participant will win a basket filled with Farmers’ Market goodies. (Vendor donations are still being finalized, so more details will come.)

Lastly, a quick reminder: our FAM (Food Assistance Match) program continues every week—doubling SNAP dollars so families can access even more fresh, local food.

Sometimes the slower days remind us what community is really about. Even with the rainy-day blues, Bethel Park still showed up—and brought the greens, too.
